Community
Aboriginal people place a great deal of value in community. The Centre for Aboriginal Studies is the hub of a vibrant community on Curtin's campus which extends to wherever our students come from or go to. Community also means participating in events such as:
- Mundjah Festival
- Reconciliation Week 2006
- NAIDOC Week 2006
- NAIDOC Week 2007
- Noongar Nation Rally
- Celebrating Indigenous Women
and to the many social and sporting activities that our students participate in while at Curtin.
Our sense of community is strengthened by the Centre's close proximity to the Clontarf Aboriginal College complex which is located just across the road from the university campus. The complex includes the College, Abmusic, Marr Mooditj, Dumbartung and the Aboriginal Development Foundation for Sport and Recreation.
Community consultation
The Centre strives to reflect the aspirations of the Aboriginal Community, and we place a strong emphasis on both formal and informal community consultation. Examples of community involvement include:
- The Aboriginal Advisory Committee with high profile members such as the Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) director Dennis Eggington, which directs, advises and supports the Head of Centre.
- Input from Aboriginal people working in Aboriginal communities and organisations as part of our block-release courses.
- Regular visits to TAFEs, prisons and schools.
Reconciliation Week 2006
2006 marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of National Reconciliation Week and to celebrate the Centre for Aboriginal Studies held a Reconciliation Week event to reaffirm Curtin's commitment to Reconciliation, reflecting on Curtin's achievements to date and considering its future direction.
