Indigenous Australian Cultural Studies

Indigenous Australian Cultural Studies (IACS) offers both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students the opportunity to gain understanding of the cultural diversity and cultural ways of Indigenous Australians. Students examine from Indigenous Australian perspectives, the cultural, social, economical, and political issues that confront Indigenous people. All the units in this major are underpinned by principles of social justice and are informed by emergent Indigenous Australians critical theory. They are highly recommended to students interested in a professional career working alongside Indigenous Australians

IACS can be taken as either a major sequence or as one or more elective units.

Why study Indigenous Australian Cultural Studies?

We believe that Indigenous Australian Cultural Studies is relevant for students of all disciplines. Completion of IACS units will:

  • Give you an added understanding of Indigenous issues on a national and local level.
  • Help you gain the cultural competency to engage meaningfully and appropriately with Indigenous communities.
  • Give you a solid foundation for embarking on research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
