Introduction

This course is designed for Aboriginal & Islander Education Officers (AIEOs), with a focus on those working in rural and remote areas, who wish to gain a Bachelor of Education degree. It is taught in ways relevant to the needs of AIEOs currently working in schools. The course is student and outcomes centred, and is delivered primarily within the school and community contexts in which people work and live, combined with four weeks attendance per semester at Curtin's Bentley campus.

Entry Requirements

Prospective students must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and currently working as an AIEO in early childhood or primary schools, and have completed Certificate III or IV for Education Workers or equivalent, or commenced a teaching degree. Students will be assessed on an individual basis and will need to demonstrate the ability and commitment to undertake the course. Literacy and numeracy skills are an important pre-requisite to teaching, however additional support will be given for students speaking English as a second language.

Course Organisation

The course uses a student centered, multi-mode delivery which includes study blocks, distance education materials, on-line learning, on-site visits and tutor and mentor support. The course is offered over 2 years, broken into 4 semesters, with 5 units undertaken each semester. Each semester consists of 4 weeks on campus (1 x two week and 2 x one week study blocks) and the remainder in the school setting, as a 'student of you work'. Of the 8 study block weeks over each year, 3 weeks coincide with term holidays to minimise time away from work. Attendance at all study blocks is compulsory.

Duration and Availability

The course is offered on a full-time basis over two years.
